In a groundbreaking initiative, the Healthy Community Action Team (HCAT) Arlington has partnered with the D.C. Food Project to launch "Share Tables" at 10 Arlington public schools. With nearly one-third of students attending Arlington Public Schools (APS) qualifying for free school meals, the Share Table initiative is a crucial step in addressing food insecurity among local children. By providing a designated space where students can place unopened and uneaten food, the program ensures that these nutritious items are not simply discarded, but instead made available to their peers who may be in need of additional sustenance during the school day.This collaborative effort not only helps to alleviate hunger but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among the students. By actively participating in the Share Table program, young learners are developing valuable life skills, such as empathy, resourcefulness, and environmental stewardship.

Reducing Food Waste in School Cafeterias

The Share Table initiative also tackles the pressing issue of food waste in school cafeterias. According to a recent food-waste audit conducted by the D.C. Food Project and HCAT Arlington, at least 75% of the food placed on the Share Tables is fresh fruits and vegetables. By diverting these nutritious items from the trash, the program not only reduces the environmental impact of food waste but also ensures that these valuable resources are put to good use, nourishing the students who need them most."The Share Table initiative is simple and effective, and kids pick up the concept very quickly," said Mary Sanders, the HCAT Arlington coordinator. "Schools are seeing less food wasted during school meals, and kids have healthy food options for snacks during the school day."

Expanding the Reach of the Share Table Program

The Share Table program has already been established at 10 Arlington public schools, including Campbell, Carlin Springs, Drew, Hoffman-Boston, Innovation, Long Branch, Oakridge, and Randolph elementary schools, as well as Kenmore and Jefferson middle schools. This expansion was made possible through a grant provided by the Arlington County government, demonstrating the community's commitment to addressing food insecurity and waste.Prior to partnering with HCAT Arlington, the D.C. Food Project had already successfully launched 16 Share Tables in District of Columbia public schools. "We are thrilled to expand our successful Share Table program to Arlington County schools and help make a meaningful impact to reduce hunger, while providing healthy food options for students during the school day," said Alysa McClellan and Lucie Leblois, the co-founders of the D.C. Food Project.

The Share Table initiative has been warmly embraced by the Arlington community, with students and staff alike expressing their appreciation for the program. "The students and staff appreciate [the Share Table]," said Karen Anselmo, the assistant principal at Campbell Elementary. "Students have access to it throughout the school day, and staff in the cafeteria report that students often come down for snacks."By empowering students to take an active role in reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity, the Share Table program is fostering a culture of compassion and sustainability within the Arlington school system.
