Scouting For Food Collection Planned Saturday
Every November, the Goose Creek District of the National Capital Area Council mobilizes Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts, and their dedicated leaders to embark on a mission that transcends the boundaries of their individual troops. The annual Scouting for Food drive is a testament to the power of community, as these young leaders and their adult counterparts come together to collect donations for local food pantries, ensuring that no one in their neighborhoods goes hungry.

Empowering the Next Generation of Community Leaders

A Longstanding Tradition of Giving

Since 1988, the Scouting for Food drive has been a cornerstone of the Goose Creek District's commitment to serving the local community. Year after year, these young scouts have taken to the streets, going door-to-door to collect non-perishable food items that are then delivered to area food pantries. This annual event not only provides a vital lifeline to those in need but also instills in the scouts a deep sense of civic responsibility and the power of collective action.

Mobilizing the Community

In the days leading up to the collection, residents across Loudoun County receive a Scouting for Food Post-It note, a simple yet effective way to inform them of the upcoming drive and provide instructions on how to contribute. This grassroots approach ensures that every household has the opportunity to participate, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose within the community.

A Remarkable Impact

The results of the Scouting for Food drive are nothing short of remarkable. Last year, more than 800 scouts and 500 volunteers came together to collect an astounding 56,300 pounds of non-perishable food items. This impressive haul not only replenished the shelves of local food pantries but also served as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the scouts and their adult leaders.

Feeding the Community, One Donation at a Time

For Loudoun Hunger Relief, the Scouting for Food drive is a crucial lifeline, providing a much-needed influx of essential items such as cereals, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, and tuna. As Jennifer Montgomery, the Chief Executive Officer of Loudoun Hunger Relief, eloquently states, "These donations could not come at a better time each year. Often, we can start using the Scouts' food the very next week to restock items."

Fostering a Culture of Compassion

The Scouting for Food drive is more than just a one-day event; it is a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of service that lies at the heart of the scouting movement. By engaging these young leaders in the act of giving, the Goose Creek District is not only addressing immediate needs but also cultivating a culture of compassion and civic engagement that will continue to shape the future of their community.
