IFM’s Bachelors Students Put Surrealism on the Runway

Fashioning the Future: IFM's Visionary Graduates Redefine the Boundaries of Design

In a captivating display of creativity and innovation, the final-year students of the Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design program at the prestigious Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) showcased their graduate collections on the runway, offering a glimpse into the future of fashion. Hailing from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, these young designers have pushed the boundaries of traditional design, weaving together a tapestry of bold, thought-provoking, and visually stunning creations.

Unleashing the Extraordinary: IFM Graduates Redefine the Boundaries of Fashion

Questioning the Body: Surreal Silhouettes and Prosthetic Limbs

The graduate collections at IFM were marked by a profound exploration of the human form, with many designers challenging the conventional notions of the body. From Noah Almonte's ball-shaped gloves that enveloped the hands to Stella Minkyung Cho's outfits adorned with realistic hair and curlers crafted into skirts, these young visionaries pushed the boundaries of what fashion can be. Several designers went even further, enclosing the body within structured sleeves or adorning their creations with mannequin-like prosthetic limbs and sculptural details that evoked a sense of the animalistic. Anthony Lacones, a French designer, molded leather into striking sporty silhouettes and offered a captivating cape of silver feathers, blurring the lines between fashion and art.

Everyday Objects Reimagined: Transforming the Mundane into the Extraordinary

The graduate collections at IFM also showcased a remarkable ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. French student Joachim Dumas' creations evoked the comfort and familiarity of leather sofas, while Franck Wandji, hailing from Côte d'Ivoire, crafted velvet rug-like bombers that challenged the traditional boundaries of fashion. Lara Kustosz, another French designer, took the concept of everyday objects a step further, seamlessly integrating wine glasses and picture frames into the very fabric of her designs.

Animalistic Instincts and Tribal Aesthetics

Hervé Yvrenogeau, the co-director of the program, observed that a common theme among the graduate collections was a distinct "animalistic" quality, with designers exploring the notion of tribes and an "instinctive approach to an ideal world." This exploration manifested in the use of sculptural details and prosthetic limbs that evoked a sense of the primal and the untamed, challenging the traditional boundaries of fashion and pushing the envelope of what is possible.

Navigating the Challenges of a Changing Industry

As these young designers prepare to graduate, they face a daunting reality – the fashion industry is in a state of flux, with the disappearance of multibrand retailers and online marketplaces, which had been the primary buyers for many fashion start-ups. Additionally, the global slowdown in the luxury goods sector has added to the challenges faced by these emerging talents. Yvrenogeau acknowledged that not all of the students will end up as fashion designers or creative directors, but he emphasized their shared desire for creative independence and self-realization, rather than financial gain.

A Unified Message: "Ceasefire Now"

In a powerful display of solidarity, the graduate designers used the runway show as a platform to convey a unified message. For the finale, each student sported a T-shirt emblazoned with the message "Ceasefire Now," underscoring their collective desire to address pressing global issues and use their creative voices to make a meaningful impact. As the curtain falls on the IFM graduate fashion show, the world eagerly awaits the next chapter in the journeys of these visionary young designers. Their bold, innovative, and thought-provoking collections have set the stage for a future where fashion transcends the boundaries of the ordinary, pushing the limits of creativity and redefining the very essence of design.
