Teenage Fashion Prodigy Captivates Newark with Modest Couture

Amani Crosby, a 15-year-old sophomore at the Newark School of Fashion & Design, is making waves in the fashion industry with her unique and thoughtful approach to modest formalwear. Under her own label, Kapture Kulture, Crosby is already selling custom prom dresses and wedding gowns, showcasing her exceptional talent and entrepreneurial spirit.

Crafting Confidence through Couture

Modest Designs, Boundless Creativity

Crosby's passion for fashion began at a young age, as she and her sister would play with dolls, cutting up socks and colored paper to create new outfits. This early experimentation with textiles and design has blossomed into a thriving business venture, with Crosby now crafting stunning formalwear that caters to the needs of those seeking modest attire."Making dresses that can make you still feel pretty while being completely covered is my whole goal," Crosby explains, highlighting her commitment to empowering her clients to feel confident and beautiful, regardless of their personal style preferences.

Honing Craft at the Newark School of Fashion & Design

Crosby's talent has been nurtured and cultivated at the Newark School of Fashion & Design, one of the city's newest public schools, which opened its doors in 2021. The school boasts a unique partnership with the prestigious Parsons School of Design, providing Crosby and her peers with access to top-tier resources and expertise."We are powered by Parsons [School of Design]," says Principal Sakina Pitts. "They support with write out curricula and they help us vet any fashion teacher." This collaboration ensures that students at the Newark School of Fashion & Design receive a well-rounded education, preparing them for success in the industry.

Entrepreneurial Endeavors: From 'Boss Up' to Nationwide Aspirations

Crosby's entrepreneurial spirit has been further nurtured through her participation in the 'Boss Up' program at Essex County College. This ten-week initiative taught her the fundamentals of business and marketing, while also providing the initial funding to launch her clothing label, Kapture Kulture."It was a game changer for Amani," says Dr. Jamila T. Davis, the program director of 'Boss Up.' "She got her fabric. She got her material. And – I want to say we were at week six – and she flipped her money."Crosby's success in the 'Boss Up' program has fueled her ambitions, as she now dreams of expanding Kapture Kulture into a nationwide apparel line and owning a corporation by the time she's 30. "I hope for the brand to be nationwide," she says, her eyes shining with determination.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Fashion Innovators

Crosby's journey has not only captured the attention of her local community but has also inspired her peers at the Newark School of Fashion & Design. Principal Pitts recognizes Crosby's talent and has recommended her for various entrepreneurial opportunities, believing that her success can serve as a model for other students."By the time they get to their senior year, a Newark School of Fashion & Design student will have learned to design for themselves and others," Pitts explains, highlighting the school's commitment to nurturing the next generation of fashion innovators. As Crosby continues to push the boundaries of modest formalwear, her story serves as a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. With the support of her school, her community, and her own unwavering determination, this teenage fashion prodigy is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry and inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
