The incident began when Daylon Vernon and his girlfriend were engaged in an argument at the Avila Apartments. According to the arrest warrant affidavits, the woman attempted to leave the situation by walking to her Kia Sorento, but Vernon followed her and forcibly entered the vehicle without permission. Desperate to get him out of the car, the woman drove to the Ashton Oaks Apartments, where the confrontation escalated.

As the woman tried to grab the keys from the ignition, Vernon violently ripped them away, causing a deep laceration on her pinky finger. He then proceeded to grab her by the hair and brutally assault her, hitting her on the head, arms, and chest in an attempt to force her out of the car.

Seeking Medical Attention, Girlfriend Becomes Victim of Arson

Realizing the severity of her injury, the woman decided to drive to the nearest hospital, the Providence Hospital, with Vernon still inside the car. Once they arrived, the woman entered the emergency room to receive medical treatment, leaving Vernon in the vehicle.

While the woman was being cared for, Vernon took a disturbing turn. According to the affidavit, he set a book on fire and dropped it onto the front seat of the Kia, causing the car to be "burned down to just the metal." The flames from the burning Kia also spread to a nearby Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing further damage.

Suspect Admits to Arson, Caught on Surveillance Footage

Vernon was subsequently taken into custody, and during an interview with a fire investigator, he admitted to setting the first page of the book on fire. He claimed that once the fire started, he tried to extinguish it by stepping on the book, but his efforts were ultimately futile.

The fire investigator's report further stated that Vernon was seen on surveillance footage standing next to the Kia before the fire started, corroborating his involvement in the arson. The investigator concluded that Vernon had "intentionally started a fire in a vehicle and was reckless about the fire," constituting the crime of arson.
