Garner Police Crack Down on Stolen Vehicles and Juvenile Crimes

In a dramatic turn of events, the Garner Police Department in North Carolina has demonstrated its commitment to public safety by apprehending suspects involved in a high-speed chase and subsequent crash. The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, resulted in the recovery of firearms, a stolen vehicle, and marijuana, shedding light on the ongoing efforts to address juvenile delinquency and vehicle theft within the community.

Cutting-Edge Technology Aids in Apprehending Suspects

Flock Safety Cameras Prove Invaluable

The Garner Police Department's utilization of Flock Safety license plate recognition cameras has proven to be a game-changer in their efforts to combat crime. These advanced cameras not only detected the stolen Kia Forte involved in the incident but have also alerted the department to a staggering 191 stolen vehicle cases since their installation in February 2022. With a remarkable 75% success rate in recovering these stolen vehicles, the Flock Safety cameras have become an indispensable tool in the department's arsenal.

Leveraging Technology to Enhance Public Safety

Captain Chris Adams of the Garner Police Department emphasized the importance of these cameras in their jurisdiction, stating, "People who come into our jurisdiction driving these vehicles are likely to commit crime in our jurisdiction. So we want to know if they're here before they commit more crime. It's been a really valuable tool for us." The department's commitment to transparency has also led to the launch of a dedicated portal on their website, where residents can learn more about the cameras and access up-to-date statistics.

Proactive Measures to Prevent Vehicle Theft

In addition to the technological advancements, the Garner Police Department has also taken proactive steps to address the surge in vehicle theft reports. The department is actively distributing free steering wheel locks, particularly targeting owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles, which have been identified as common targets for thieves.

Addressing Juvenile Delinquency

The recent incident also sheds light on the growing concern over juvenile involvement in criminal activities. Captain Adams acknowledged the correlation between school breaks and an increase in juvenile offenses, stating, "With the kids out of school, you see an increase in juvenile offenses. It's something we're mindful of." The department's approach, however, emphasizes the importance of guiding these young offenders towards the right path, recognizing the potential for rehabilitation and redemption.

Suspects Apprehended and Charged

The police were able to apprehend the suspects involved in the high-speed chase and crash, identifying the driver as 19-year-old Shaad Harper and a 16-year-old accomplice. A third suspect, 19-year-old Tra'Sond McNeil, was also arrested at the scene. Both Harper and McNeil faced a range of charges, including possession of stolen vehicles, carrying concealed firearms, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Ongoing Efforts to Maintain Public Safety

The Garner Police Department's proactive approach to combating vehicle theft and juvenile crime has yielded tangible results, but the battle is far from over. Captain Adams acknowledged the department's commitment to continued vigilance, stating, "We want people to know what's going on, some people have had privacy concerns, that's not what we're using these cameras for." The department's dedication to public safety and its willingness to adapt to emerging challenges serve as a testament to its unwavering commitment to the community it serves.
